As a non-Muslim, it's very difficult to not see a man with unusually good fortune and a vast store of ambition, intelligence, and craftiness. There have been many people throughout history like him. What sets him apart is how conducive the time and place were to his message, and how relevant that message has remained. He, along with Jesus, have shaped the present and foreseeable future, for better or worse.

Insightful comments, John. The right man at the right time, notwithstanding any other factors (human and/or divine).

There are a lot of similarities between the life of Muhammad and the life of Jesus. For instance, the time Muhammad spent in retreat before he received his revelations is similar to the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert. I think that Muhammad did enter the scene at an appropriate time: Mecca especially, and the Arabian Peninsula (and some might say world) in general, were both poised for change. Some would say that the times were coincidental and the Muhammad simply was the right man to organize this change, and some would say that both Muhammad and the world were divinely prepared for each other.
